What Do Children & Home Energy Have In Common?

LiveGreen Icon

They can both be sneaky and rarely want to be confined inside the house!  The bright spot is you can see (and hear) your child when they go outside.  Energy loss is a whole different story.

One question we hear a lot is “How big can this problem really be?” It’s a fair question because energy loss is not visible.  Per the US Department of Energy, the average home has enough air leakage to add up to a two-foot square hole.  That’s like leaving a medium-sized window open for 24 hours!

Home Energy

As expensive as energy cost are, it’s hard to imagine leaving a window open and running the air conditioner at the same time!  Unfortunately, what’s going out is not the only problem.   Open areas let in pollen, insects and vermin.  The bigger the hole, the bigger the intruder!

Here are some culprits to think about that usually are not on top of people minds:

  • Electrical outlets that are not insulated
  • Gaps in conduit piping
  • HVAC leaks (this also brings in dirty air)
  • Fireplaces
  • Insulation (lack of, incorrect type, etc.)

We’ve come a long way in how we approach energy management and most of us try to conserve where we can.  Controlling energy loss is a bit trickier than turning back the thermostat but it’s not impossible to manage.
